In the science city of “Skolkovo”

In continuation of the story about the trip of the director of IZB, Matlyuba Ruvazhiddinovna, to Moscow, we want to tell you about her visit to Skolkovo.

Many have heard about Skolkovo, some have a little idea of where and what it is about, and some have only heard a glimpse and have no idea what it is about. Skolkovo is the most famous Russian scientific and technological innovation center which is engaged in the development and commercialization of various inventions. There are more than 150 investor companies inside Skolkovo, hundreds of industrial partners and as well as more than 2,000 startups. The foundation organized specifically to support and develop young (and not so young) developers carefully selects those who want to become residents and, if successful, conducts and supports their research activities, as well as helps them monetize technological inventions.

If you thought that the space of Skolkovo is limited to two or three modern buildings, then you are very mistaken. This is a whole city, fully equipped with everything for a comfortable stay and work in it, with its own infrastructure and a good layout. The city consists of four districts, each of which is self-sufficient in terms of a comfortable urban environment. Low-altitude and dense buildings for walking distance – is it not a convenience for those who work and live there? And yes, these are not only scientific buildings, they are also shops, shopping and sports centers, residential buildings.

The main component of the Skolkovo ecosystem is the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) itself, which was created with the participation of one of the most successful technological universities in the world — the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Its training is based on innovative and business practices, as the institute trains researchers and entrepreneurs. And Skolkovo prepares its wards to work in a rapidly changing scientific and technological landscape. Most of the Skolkovo graduates found their own fairly successful startups.

Another foundation of the ecosystem is the largest Technopark in Eastern Europe, whose task is to unite residents from different regions and provide them with all the necessary services for technology development. It is the Technopark that is best known to visitors of the complex. Various forums, contests and exhibitions are held here, and collective use centers, laboratories and offices of more than 250 residents are located here.

Almost all the inventions that have appeared in Skolkovo are a step into the future. They bring convenience in all spheres of human activity from nuclear and space technologies to the household sphere. For example, the Try fit system helps, sitting at home, measure the size of the foot with an accuracy of 100% and order shoes online that are right for you. Or here is a thermal imager that fixes you, measures your size and selects the right size of clothes. And all this can be done without taking off your clothes. Like little things that we do without every day, but it’s nice.   After all, they save time, and this is almost the most important thing in our busy life today. And here is an example that is very significant in the medical field: the invention of an exoskeleton for rehabilitation at home and in clinical settings. Thanks to Skolkovo, electromechanical upper limb prostheses are produced for children and adults, which can be controlled at the level of reflexes thanks due to a system for removing electrical impulses from muscles. Many of these inventions, as well as the laboratories where they are created, can be observed in the Technopark, which was visited by Matlyuba Ruvazhiddinovna with colleagues from the Sekhriyo.

To visit such a place is, at a minimum, to get an interesting experience and get acquainted with innovations in the field of technology, which are constantly issued by various minds involved in this field. This is a lot of impressions of how much science has advanced and what kind of creations a person is capable of today. And, of course, this is an introduction to innovations in the field of education, because many of them may soon break into our daily life.
